Printers

A printer is a device that accepts text and graphic output from a computer and transfers the information to paper, usually to standard size sheets of paper. Printers called 'Multi-Function Centres' have evolved to perform include capabilties such as fax, scan images and text and copying.

When choosing a printer there are five main qualities that require consideration;
• Colour or Black & White
• Resolution: usually measured in dots per inch or DPI
• Speed: pages per minute
• Memory
• Running costs (ink, toner, cartridges, etc)

Scanners

A scanner provides the ability to take hard-copy information and create and electronic of soft-copy on the computer.

• Scanning area: size of the document that can be scaned in one pass (cm x cm)
• Colour depth: ability to resolve detail in the colour (eg - from 256 to 16.7 million colours)
• Resolution: dots or pixels per inch (cm) affects image sharpness
